Jannik Sinner is in Beijing to defend his China Open title but could face a tough challenge from Carlos Alcaraz if they meet in the final.

After a successful run at the US Open, Jannik Sinner will be bidding to defend his China Open title, having won the tournament last year by beating Daniil Medvedev. While Sinner is in the first quarter of the draw, rival Carlos Alcaraz and Medvedev are in the later quarters.
The China Open will be Sinner’s first competition since winning his second major title at Flushing Meadows. Alcaraz, on the other hand, will enter the tournament on the back of a successful run at the Laver Cup for Team Europe. Six-time China Open champion Novak Djokovic chose not to land in Beijing as the Shanghai Open will be the tournament he will play next following his third-round exit at the US Open.

China Open 2024 Draw Preview
First Quarter
In the first quarter, top seed Jannik Sinner will be meeting an unseeded Nicolas Jarry, while wild card entrant Stan Wawrinka will face Jan-Lennard Struff. The 39-year-old Swiss veteran is playing his first tournament since his first-round exit at the US Open.
The winner of the match between Jiri Lehecka and Pedro Martinez could face Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round. Dimitrov, just like Alcaraz, was part of Team Europe’s victory at the Laver Cup and the China Open Round of 32 will be the first match he will play since the event in Berlin.

Second Quarter
Andrey Rublev will clash with Pablo Carreno Busta, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will be up against China’s Zhang Zhizhen. There are two more home favorites as Shang Juncheng, who defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the Chengdu Open, will lock horns with compatriot Bu Yunchaokete.
Musetti, on the other hand, will be meeting a qualifier. He has been impressive this season so far and will be aiming for another final appearance on the ATP Tour.

Third Quarter
This quarter has two Top 10 seeds, eighth seed Alexander Bublik and third seed Daniil Medvedev. Bublik will open his account with a match against Flavio Cobolli, while Yi Zhou, the wild card entrant, will be meeting a qualifier.
Lorenzo Sonego will be clashing with Adrian Mannarino, while Medvedev will square off against former World No.6 Gael Monfils, against whom the Russian is 2-2 in their head-to-head meetings.

Fourth Quarter
The fourth quarter features Karen Khachanov and Carlos Alcaraz as the two seeded players. Khachanov’s first match is against a qualifier, while Alcaraz will face Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Francisco Cerundolo also will meet a qualifier, while Tallon Griekspoor, who is also playing doubles, will be up against Miomir Kecmanovic.

In the second semifinal, Alcaraz could emerge victorious over Francisco Cerundolo, while Daniil Medvedev would be the favorite to win against Alexander Bublik. It would be a blockbuster semifinal if Alcaraz faces Medvedev.
