No player other than Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz has dominated in Grand Slam events since last year because these two have won the last seven Majors. Sinner ended the recently concluded Wimbledon in his favor with a four-set win over Alcaraz.

The Spaniard was the winner at the French Open while Sinner was the runner-up. Novak Djokovic is the last player other than Alcaraz and Sinner to win a Major (2023 US Open), and his retirement will mark the end of the Big 3 era.

Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca is expected to join Sinner and Alcaraz to form another Big 3. But Fonseca at present is not producing consistent performances, because of which some fans are criticizing him for not living up to the expectations. American tennis ace Chris Eubanks, however, pointed out that even Sinner and Alcaraz struggled when they were newcomers on the tour. He told Andy Roddick on his Served podcast:

I think people forget Carlos’ early years or Sinner’s. We remember them when they start to dominate, and that’s what our mind, I think, goes to. I mean, he (Alcaraz) was the US Open champion in 2022, but like there were times (he didn’t win). Like he played Rio, he didn’t win Rio. He then lost to Museetti in the final of the Hamburg Open, I believe, in 2022.

Fonseca made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the Australian Open this year and made it to the second round. Then, at the French Open and Wimbledon, his campaign ended in the third round.

Like, guys were still having okay results, but we’re forgetting that that happened for say a year or a year and a half before boom, Carlos jumps in and wins the US Open.

The 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals winner lifted his career’s first ATP singles title at the Argentina Open by beating home favorite Francisco Cerundolo. He failed to reach the quarterfinals of every tournament he played next. At Wimbledon, Nicolas Jarry was the reason behind his elimination.

Andrea Petkovic shares why she was supporting Jannik Sinner during the Wimbledon final

Andrea Petkovic, on Substack, revealed that she was rooting for Jannik Sinner during his Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz. The reason was that she thought Alcaraz’s victory would have made the rivalry one-sided.

Before Wimbledon, Sinner had lost five consecutive matches to Alcaraz, including twice this season- in Rome and Paris. But now, they have a 1-1 win-loss record in Grand Slam finals.

I was rooting for Jannik this time because I was worried that if Carlos won again, the rivalry would’ve become a ‘rivalry’. I was rooting for tennis. But after the match had finished, the champagne corks had been collected and the glasses emptied, after the dances had been danced and hugs had been hugged, I realised as long as we have both of them around, tennis always wins.

Alcaraz, at Wimbledon, played his eighth final of the season. He was chasing his sixth title following his victories at the Rotterdam Open, Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, French Open, and the Queen’s Club Championships.

The Wimbledon title was Sinner’s second title of the season. Back in January, he defended his Australian Open title by breezing past Alexander Zverev. Next, both players will be gearing up for the Canadian Open, which Alcaraz had skipped last year. Sinner was defeated in the quarterfinals by eventual runner-up Andrey Rublev.

Last year, the 22-year-old made early exits in the two tournaments he had played at the North American hard-court swing, but Sinner had won the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open. Alcaraz was the winner at Flushing Meadows in 2022.
