The Azerbaijan GP, which looked promising for Sergio Perez, took a turn for the worse. On lap 50, Perez collided with Carlos Sainz, leading to a major crash that left Red Bull disappointed. Despite Perez’s strong performance, Lando Norris was focused on slowing him down to benefit his teammate, Oscar Piastri, in the race.

Team Principal Christian Horner believed that Sergio Perez could have won the race if he hadn’t faced delays. Unfortunately, the Mexican lost valuable time during his out laps while stuck behind Alex Albon.

Lando Norris also cost him time, which allowed Oscar Piastri to gain a better track position. These setbacks prevented Perex from capitalizing on his strong performance and ultimately affected his chances of winning.

Horner opined that without the unfortunate setbacks, Perez would have won the race. He said it was heartbreaking for the 34-year-old to put so much effort into the race only to lose a podium position in the end. The team was particularly disappointed for Perez as his victory slipped away due to the challenges he faced.

I think without that he would've won the race today. It's heartbreaking for him, seeing so much effort goes into losing the podium at the end of the race.

Christian Horner explains why Sergio Perez was faster than Max Verstappen during Azerbaijan GP

Christian Horner explained that Sergio Perez was faster than Max Verstappen at the Azerbaijan GP because he found a good driving rhythm and had a well-tuned car setup. The Mexican’s car performed exceptionally well during the race.

On the other hand, there might have been some changes made to Verstappen’s car that didn’t work as well, affecting his performance. This combination of factors led to Perez’s quicker pace compared to the Dutchman.

He found a good rhythm and set-up. Checo’s car was very quick today. We might have introduced some things on Max’s car which didn’t work so well.
Christian Horner explained

Certainly, Perez’s RB20 was better tuned than Verstappen’s, enabling him to out-qualify the Dutchman for the first time since the 2023 Miami GP. Fans were deeply disappointed as Checo’s hard work was ruined by the crash, thereby preventing him from registering a strong finish.
