It’s been over three weeks since John Cena‘s WWE career ended, and pretty much like the majority of the fanbase, CM Punk understood the criticism regarding how ‘The Last Real Champion’ tapped out to Gunther with a smile on his face. ‘The Best in the World’, however, couldn’t wrap his head around the extent to which some people have whined about it online.

Appearing on My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox, Punk spoke candidly about the negative fan reaction to Cena submitting to ‘The Ring General’ at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13. While the Chicagoan said he got why some fans didn’t like the ending, he pushed back on the idea that it betrayed Cena’s legacy.

Put it this way, if John won, they’d be mad about that too, but we wouldn’t be talking about it anymore, and we’re still talking about that finish. The smile, the tap, ‘Oh my God the guy that said don’t give up just gave up’, did he? Everybody’s an expert, I thought it was beautiful.

‘The Second City Saint’ suggested that many viewers overanalyzed the moment. He affirmed that even if Cena had won, the fans would have still complained just as loudly, but the discussion wouldn’t have lasted like it has with ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ losing. Instead, the sight of Cena smiling before tapping out has only triggered further debates, which Punk viewed as evidence that the story connected.

For CM Punk, the fact that people are still talking about that controversial finish is what made the moment effective. Ultimately, the ‘Straight Edge Superstar’ didn’t see the ending as diminishing. In fact, he thought it was rather beautiful. For the unversed, the reigning World Heavyweight Champion was in the building watching his great rival battling it out with Gunther.

Even Punk was shocked seeing Cena make such a move to call it quits on his legendary career. ‘The Voice of the Voiceless’ later shared a special moment with the 17-time world champion in the ring with Cody Rhodes also joining in. Punk and Cena did get to wrestle each other in a singles match at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia but the ending was loaded with shenanigans.

Medical updates on CM Punk and Bron Breakker after their topsy-turvy encounter on Raw

This week on Raw, CM Punk defended his World Heavyweight title against Bron Breakker. Despite being outgunned in terms of strength and athleticism, what worked in Punk’s favor were his veteran instincts. ‘The Best in the World’ not only hung in there as long as he could, but the 47-year-old also made it loud and clear that he has enough gas left in the tank even at this stage of his career.

The Vision also made their presence known at ringside, but the villainous faction got neutralized by the trio of Rey Mysterio, Penta, and Dragon Lee. The ending sequence saw CM Punk making a miraculous comeback after he went through the commentary desk, with Bron Breakker taking him out with a leap off the top rope.

‘The Unpredictable Badass’ ran into a knee strike while going for the spear, and it allowed the champ to land a second GTS of the bout on his challenger to retain the world title. The major point of discord coming out of that hellacious battle was the physical well-being of both wrestlers.

Breakker was medically evaluated by WWE afterwards due to his abrupt landing off the failed Frankensteiner attempt on Punk in the first go. The Vision member was said to be fine, as reported by Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio. Speaking of Punk, any rumors of him being placed into a concussion protocol after Raw have been deemed incorrect by PWInsider. All in all, there don’t appear to be any injury concerns.
