It feels like just yesterday that CM Punk burst onto the scene in ECW back in 2006, instantly making a name for himself. Over the next eight years, the Chicago native became one of WWE’s biggest stars, capturing multiple world titles and establishing himself as the face of the company.
His rebellious, anti-establishment persona–highlighted by the infamous 2011 pipebomb promo cemented his place in wrestling history. Moreover, Punk’s 434-day WWE Championship reign only added to his mystique. But things eventually soured due to creative frustrations, leading to his shocking walkout in 2014.
Nearly a decade later, however, history was made once again when Punk made his triumphant return to WWE at Survivor Series 2023, fittingly in his hometown of Chicago. Since then, he has enjoyed another incredible run, adding another world title to his resume and delivering memorable matches against the likes of John Cena, Seth Rollins, and Drew McIntyre.
But even amidst this dream comeback, fans can’t ignore the fact that Punk recently turned 47, a reminder that his time in the ring may be nearing its end. In a recent vlog on WWE’s YouTube channel showcasing the company’s tour of Japan and Australia, Punk spoke candidly about AJ Styles and Cena.
As fans know by now, the legendary duo is set to retire within the next year. His comments hinted that he might not be far behind them.
So I’m standing here now, near the end of my career. You know, John Cena’s calling it quits, AJ Styles says he’s going to retire next year, and I don’t know how much time I’ve got left. I’m going to keep going until the wheels fall off.

Punk went on to say that he’s focusing on living in the moment and celebrating fellow wrestlers as they step away from the ring.
I know that’s sooner rather than later. That’s why I think it’s important, for all of us, not just me, to celebrate every wrestler as they retire. There’s a whole new generation of talent coming in to take our place, and in a way, we’re excited to see that happen.

It has been over 25 years since Punk made his debut on the independent scene. His early success in Ring of Honor in 2002 paved the way for his rise in WWE, where he built a legendary legacy before his 2014 departure.
In 2021, he resurfaced in AEW, enjoying initial success before injuries and the infamous backstage altercation with The Elite after All Out 2022 led to his exit. 2025, however, has been a career renaissance for ‘The Best in the World.’
Punk finally main-evented WrestleMania and even teamed up with his wife, AJ Lee, who returned to the ring after more than a decade away. Now, Punk has his eyes set on reclaiming the World Heavyweight Championship as he prepares to face Jey Uso on the November 1st edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event.
CM Punk praises Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley and calls them the future of WWE
In the same vlog, CM Punk took a moment to praise two of WWE’s top women’s stars who have redefined what it means to be a modern-day superstar. During WWE’s recent tour of Japan, Punk spoke highly of former Women’s World Champions Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky, calling both of them vital to the company’s future.

Ripley and Sky have recently formed an alliance, united by their shared rivalry with the Kabuki Warriors. Their growing partnership was highlighted during the Japan tour, where they shared a special in-ring moment with Punk after a live event.
Iyo Sky is consistently, I think, the best wrestler that we have. Rhea is probably a close second, but you talk about a superstar…. Those two are the future.

Punk also acknowledged that Ripley was a huge fan of his growing up, comparing her admiration to that of fans who credit him for inspiring them or helping them change their lives. He said he feels immense gratitude for that support and simply wants to give back to those who looked up to him, especially now that he’s in the twilight of his career.
Beyond praising Ripley and Sky, Punk also paid tribute to Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles. He shared that it was a special moment watching Styles wrestle his final match in Japan, as the entire locker room lifted him on their shoulders in celebration.
Punk reflected on how meaningful it was to share the ring with Nakamura in Japan, honoring both legends in what was an emotional and memorable tour.
