Ahead of his SummerSlam clash against Drew McIntyre, CM Punk appeared on ESPN’s First Take. During the interview, the former WWE Champion disclosed his list of his top 5 favorite wrestlers of all time. Punk named, in no particular order: Terry Funk, Harley Race, Eddie Guerrero, Steve Austin, and Roddy Piper. The Second City Saint notably left out his childhood hero, Bret Hart, which sparked a lot of questions online.
Responding to his list, Punk took to Instagram to clarify his mistake. As such, he hilariously placed Hart in every position on his top five list. Moreover, the 45-year-old seemingly claimed that he wasn’t in the right space of mind during his media appearance. For years, Punk has openly expressed his love and admiration for the Excellence of Execution.
The Voice of the Voiceless has said on several occasions how he was a “Bret Hart” guy while growing up watching the sport. In fact, this made for a funny moment when he wore the Canadian legend’s sweatshirt during a segment with Shawn Michaels last year.
As for the other wrestlers listed by him, CM Punk stated that Piper’s character work and ability to stand out in an era where muscular men were preferred inspired him a lot. The former AEW star also heaped praise on Steve Austin and his impact on the industry.
Speaking of his bout against Drew McIntyre, the Best in the World will return to in-ring competition at SummerSlam. After months of back-and-forth jabs and screwjobs, the two men will finally collide in the squared circle. However, they’ll have to be wary of a certain Visionary who will pose as the special guest referee for their bout.
What Bret Hart texted CM Punk following his match at WrestleMania 27
In 2011, CM Punk was on the rise to stardom in WWE. Despite winning the World Heavyweight title twice, he wasn’t viewed as a main-event-caliber star backstage. Therefore, the Second City Saint walked into his match against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 27 with a chip on his shoulder.
In an objectively dreadful show, Punk and Orton had one of the best bouts of the night. Ahead of this year’s WrestleMania, the duo sat down to watch their match. During the watchalong, the Best in the World revealed that Bret Hart texted him following the clash.
The Excellence of Execution told Punk that his bout with Orton was the best of the night. In response, Orton said that it always feels good to receive validation and praise from a legend like Hart.
