A lot of things had to fall exactly into place for CM Punk to make his return to WWE after almost a decade. He had just gotten fired from AEW, the new regime in WWE was in full swing, and coincidentally, one of WWE’s big 4 PLEs was about to take place in his hometown of Chicago. Thankfully, things worked out the way that they did. Hell froze over, and fans got to witness one of the best returns in professional wrestling history.
CM Punk recently made an appearance on the No Contest Wrestling Podcast. During the episode, he revealed some backstage details about his incredible return at Survivor Series 2023. He had arrived at the Allstate Arena without even having a contract in his hand. They cleared the hallway for him, and they took him straight to Triple H‘s office as the War Games match got underway.
The lawyers sorted out the contracts, and Punk was later taken to the Gorilla position. He ran into several people from his past there, including Bayley, Stephanie McMahon, and William Regal. The Voice of the Voiceless then turned to talk to Hunter to figure out what he was going to do after walking out in front of the Chicago crowd.
Triple H wanted Punk to walk out all the way to the ring and stand in between the two cages. The former AEW star wasn’t fully on board and had a back-and-forth with the WWE CCO. Eventually, they figured it out, and the Chicago native got to have his incredible moment.
CM Punk is trying to change the standard approach to Hell in a Cell matches in WWE
During the same podcast, CM Punk talked about the thought process behind his Hell in a Cell match against Drew McIntyre at Bad Blood. He felt the pressure of having to put on a classic match on Sunday. He felt that WWE had started to treat the cell like a toy. The 45-year-old instead wanted to change this approach to the stipulation.
CM Punk was referring to the Hell in a Cell PLE that WWE ran from 2009 to 2022. The card sometimes even featured three matches inside the cell on the same night. The Straight Edge Superstar believed that the cell should be presented as the most dangerous and diabolical thing that a wrestler ever has to do in their life.
The Raw superstar was a strong advocate that a feud should earn the right to have a match take place inside the Hell in a Cell. It is safe to say that his blood feud against Drew McIntyre definitely falls into this category. The two of them have done incredible work over the past year to build their heated feud. As the rivalry stands at 1-1 tie, fans eagerly await to see who comes on top finally at Bad Blood.
