NXT had been airing on The USA Network since 2019, when it became a two-hour program. After five years, the show now has a new home. The latest episode of the developmental brand was the first one to air on CW. To celebrate the occasion, the show emanated from Chicago and featured a special appearance from hometown hero CM Punk.
Shortly after the show went off the air, CM Punk stood in the ring alongside Trick Williams. He got on the microphone and announced that on their way out, the Chicago crowd would be getting free pizza from Lou Malnati’s, a Chicago-style pizza chain headquartered in Illinois. The crowd erupted in cheers, and the two superstars hugged it out in the ring.
Punk was announced to be the special guest referee for the NXT Championship match between Ethan Page and Trick Williams. During the match, the Canadian tried to go for a pin and put his feet on the ropes for leverage. However, the Straight Edge Superstar caught him and disallowed the pin.

Williams eventually caught his opponent with a Trick Shot and pinned Page to become a 2x NXT Champion. As he celebrated, Punk hit a GTS onto the former AEW star. The show also featured many other high-profile matches, such as Giulia vs. Roxanne Perez for the NXT Women’s Championship and Wes Lee vs. Zachary Wentz.
Shawn Michaels comments on the possibility of CM Punk taking over NXT
Ever since his return to the company, CM Punk has regularly visited the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. He is often spotted helping out younger talent and is well-respected amongst the NXT roster. He has also expressed interest in working under Shawn Michaels to see how the machine operates and perhaps take over one day.
Speaking on the Ringer Wrestling Show, Michaels recently commented on the possibility of the Best in the World taking over the reins of the developmental brand. He said that if the Voice of the Voiceless truly had it in his heart to mentor younger talent and run the show, he could absolutely be a successor to the HBK’s current role.
Shawn Michaels never thought that he would ever find someone who was as excited as himself to be providing for the younger stars of WWE. However, he saw the same feeling in Punk’s eyes. Thus, if the Chicago native ever wanted to transition to his role after ending his in-ring career, he would fully support him.
