The quarterfinal match at the Monte-Carlo Masters between Denmark’s Holger Rune and Italy’s Jannik Sinner was not without drama. After Dane’s loss, his coach Patrick Mouratoglou congratulated Sinner, but netizens started telling the Frenchman that he needed to instill good behavior in the 20-year-old.
During the match, Rune was frustrated after the crowd booed him for receiving the time violation. It prompted him to make a hand gesture toward the crowd, and, as a consequence, he was handed a code violation for unsportsmanlike behavior.
Rune then started arguing with the umpire, Damien Dumusois, and involved the supervisor, Cedric Mourier, as well. He told the supervisor that he deserved the time violation, but his gesture to the crowd was not unsportsmanlike.
After Sinner’s win, Mouratoglou remained tight-lipped about the whole controversy and took to Instagram to post pictures of him, Sinner, and Rune from the match. He lauded Rune’s preparation for the clay season as well.
Great preparation for the clay season with lots of practice and many hours of competition this week at the @rolexmontecarlomasters. Congratulations to @janniksin on a great match and good luck for the rest of the tournament.Patrick Mouratoglou wrote on Instagram

The 20-year-old then gave a tough competition to Sinner the next day but couldn’t end the match in his favor, losing with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6.
