American WTA star Coco Gauff has stated that she has not had the summer she hoped for, following her exit from the 2024 US Open. The World No. 3, who was looking to defend her title in New York, lost to compatriot Emma Navarro in the fourth round on Sunday (September 1).
Gauff admitted that she has not been able to live up to expectations. While she is proud of the few achievements she managed this year, she called her performances during the summer this season the “least probably done well” of her career.
I guess for me, yeah, it's not the summer that I want. I feel like there's, like, 70 other players in the draw that would love to have the summer that I had even though it's my least probably done well during this time of the year. So many people want to be in the fourth round. So many people want to make the Olympics. So many people want to be flag bearer. It's perspective.Coco Gauff said at a US Open press conference
The 20-year-old, however, said she will not give herself a hard time about it as she is well aware that she can turn things in the future.
Obviously, because I'm wanting to reach a different level, it is disappointing, but I'm not going to beat myself up and be, like, this was so bad. Yeah, I expect better, but at the end of the day it happened, and I know I can turn it around.Coco Gauff added
Coming to New York, all eyes were on Gauff following her incredible run at the US Open last year, where she claimed her maiden Grand Slam title. However, she failed to live up to expectations, losing 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 loss to Navarro in the fourth round. Incidentally, Gauff lost to Navarro in the fourth round at the Wimbledon as well.
Coco Gauff’s underwhelming 2024 season
While Coco Gauff is still in the early stages of her career, winning a Grand Slam title at the age of 19 sent expectations through the roof. But the 2024 season has been nowhere close to what Gauff would have liked.
The World No. 3 has won only one title this season, which came in Auckland at the start of the year. Since then, Gauff has not reached a single final. At the four Grand Slams, she managed to reach the semifinals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros while suffering fourth-round exits at Wimbledon and US Open.
Interestingly, Gauff has suffered quite a few defeats at the hands of players outside the top 10. In fact, out of the 14 losses endured this season, the American has lost 10 matches to playersoutside the top 10. Among the four losses to top 10 players, she lost twice to Iga Swiatek (in Rome and Paris) and once each to Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari.
