Coco Gauff has admitted that the competitiveness among women’s tennis players is very close, compared to the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in the men’s circuit. The American star’s statement comes after Alcaraz and Sinner won the last eight Grand Slams, while the women’s singles had different champions last year.

In 2025, all four of the women’s finals of Grand Slam tournaments were won by different players in contrast to Sinner and Alcaraz splitting the four men’s titles between them. At the Australian Open last year, Madison Keys kicked off the year by winning the Australian Open, after which Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka to win the French Open.

At Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek claimed her first grass major title after beating Amanda Anisimova in a double bagel, and Sabalenka took the US Open to round out the year in major events. Meanwhile, in the men’s circuit, Sinner claimed the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while Alcaraz triumphed at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows.

Sinner and Alcaraz have set themselves apart in the ATP Tour for the past season, heating up a rivalry that has dominated men’s tennis. No player has been able to challenge them, not even Novak Djokovic, who has won 24 Grand Slams in his career. The pair have reached the last three Grand Slam finals and are favorites to meet in the final of the ongoing Australian Open.

However, in the women’s circuit, things are a little bit unpredictable. For instance, last year’s World No. 1, Sabalenka, was beaten in five finals and managed to win just four titles. When analyzing the difference in competitive level in the men’s and women’s circuit, Gauff pointed out that the competition in the WTA is between multiple players:

I know that the women’s, for example, last week, Amanda Anisimova was No. 3, and then, at the end of that week I was No. 3, so I know it’s those are going to be very close. I feel like it’s mainly always going to be like that on the women’s side because I just feel like we’re all very close right now. I’ve noticed on the men they there seems to be Alcaraz and Sinner doing really well, but I don’t count the other guys out, I think, a couple other guys have a really good chance of breaking that rhythm.

Alcaraz kicked off his Australian Open campaign on Sunday (January 18), beating Australia’s Adam Walton 6-3, 7-6, 6-2. He will face German star Yannick Hanfmann in the second round in Melbourne on Wednesday (January 21). The Spaniard is seeking to become the youngest player to complete a Career Grand Slam. On the other hand, Sinner will face Hugo Gaston on Tuesday (January 20).

Coco Gauff kicks off her Australian Open campaign with straightforward win

Coco Gauff made a solid start to the 2026 Australian Open after securing a straightforward victory against Kamilla Rakhimova. The American star put together a solid opening performance as she bids for her third Grand Slam title. Despite struggling with serves early in the match, Gauff completely outmatched the Uzbekistan star 6-2, 6-3.

The win was Gauff’s 75th Grand Slam victory on tour. During the aforementioned press conference, Gauff explained how her ambitions in Slam tournaments have helped her manage her nerves in opening round matches:

I have lost in first rounds before and I’ve always been able to pick it up so I try not to put so much pressure on myself in the first rounds. I think at this point, I just want to win the tournament. So whether I lose first round or in the final, I think that will be as satisfying. So, until then, it’s okay.
