In Short
  • Coco Gauff faced criticism for her natural hairstyle during a Miu Miu photoshoot.
  • In response, she shared a TikTok video encouraging young Black girls to embrace their hair.
  • Gauff later posted about her nighttime skincare routine, asking followers if they wanted a morning routine video as well.

Coco Gauff is gearing up for the Stuttgart Open, which is underway at the  Porsche-Arena. She will be up against Antonia Ruzic or Liudmila Samsonova in her opening round.

A few days ago, Gauff found herself on the receiving end of criticism from trolls simply because she showed off her natural hair that she wore in a tight bun during her photoshoot for the Miu Miu brand. Many social media users believed her style was “unpolished” and “unkempt”.

Such negative comments affected the 22-year-old, but she responded to the criticism by posting an eight-minute video on her TikTok, saying she doesn’t owe any apology just because she has kinky hair.

To all the young Black girls out there who have kinky hair like me, do what you want to do with your hair. […] I’m not going to lie, for two days I was feeling rough. I’m someone who has struggled with looks throughout my life, just being a young Black girl in this world.

Days after that controversy, Gauff shared another video on TikTok, but this time, it was about her nighttime skincare routine. She asked her followers whether they wanted a separate video on her morning skincare routine as well.

Lmk if you guys want the morning one too? My quality of videos will get better lol I need to get a new phone #skincare #nightroutine #selfcare.

Although for that photoshoot, though Gauff did not choose a sleek hairstyle, she loves experimenting with color and texture for her hair.

Belinda Bencic shares what makes Coco Gauff a tough opponent

Belinda Bencic has faced Coco Gauff seven times, out of which she has won a couple of matches. They last met in the quarterfinals of this year’s Miami Open, which the American won before she reached the final and lost the title to World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka.

After Miami, the Swiss ace participated in the Charleston Open, where her run ended in the quarterfinals with a three-set defeat to 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys. In a press conference during the WTA 500 event on clay, the former World No.4 was asked what makes Gauff a tough opponent.

She’s a tough opponent. We have some great matches every time we play, and it’s really admirable how she moves. You definitely feel like the court is much smaller. I like to attack, of course, and she makes it really hard. She makes you replay balls. Her serve is also very tough. I know she gets a lot of comments, and this and that, but her serve is very good. It’s very fast when she puts it in.

Gauff has so far served 162 double faults, the most on the tour this year. Last year, her double fault tally was 431. To fix her serve problems, she is working with biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan.

Of course, sometimes you can have some problems with the rhythm and everything, but I don’t think she should get so much negative comments because her game is very unique and a very different rhythm. She changes speed and spins, and rhythm. She really can play everywhere in the court, and also she’s moving great.

Belinda Bencic added

Gauff did not play in Charleston. She instead will start her campaign on the European clay swing at the Stuttgart Open. The two-time Grand Slam singles champion will be chasing her first title since the 2025 Wuhan Open. Last year on the clay swing, Gauff lost the Italian Open and the Madrid Open finals but won her second Major singles title by beating Sabalenka at the French Open.
