In that match between Williams and Mattek-Sands, the former easily won 6-3, 6-1 to reach the second round and faced former World No. 1, Angelique Kerber. She lost the match to Kerber in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
Coco Gauff locked horns with Venus Williams two times
Coco Gauff was eight years old when she watched Venus Williams‘ match. Then, just seven years later, Gauff played against the tennis great for the first time.
It was at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. A 15-year-old Gauff, who won the qualifiers, faced Williams in the first round and stunned the five-time Wimbledon champion in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The next year, they again met at the Australian Open, and the result was no different. Gauff clinched her second win over her idol in straight sets (7-6, 6-3). Then in 2021, they paired up to play at the French Open but lost to Saisai Zheng and Ellen Perez in the first round 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Both Gauff and Williams last participated at the Miami Open. While the young sensation couldn’t reach the quarterfinals, the 43-year-old Williams lost in the first round.
