Coco Gauff has made history by becoming the youngest American since Serena Williams to win a Grand Slam as she lifts the 2023 US Open title. She won it at the age of 19, becoming only the 10th teenager to lift the title. The sixth seed defeated second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the tournament, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, despite losing the first set. She showed her mettle in the US Open and has finally won the first Grand Slam of her career.
In the first round, Aryna Sabalenka was able to use Coco Gauff’s weakness, i.e., her forehand, against her. She constantly targeted the youngster’s forehand and was highly successful. The Belarusian ended up winning the set 6-2, putting Coco under pressure. However, the 19-year-old made a brilliant comeback in the second set where she maintained her composure and totally dominated Aryna Sabalenka. The second set was won by the Americans 6-2.
From there on, Aryna Sabalenka’s confidence was evidently shattered, as she never seemed to make a comeback in the match. She made numerous unforced errors and the fans were confused by her performance, as she was hands down abysmal in the last two sets. The pressure seemingly got to her and she could not hold her nerves.
Coco Gauff has had an impeccable 2023 season. Although she had a poor run in the Wimbledon Open, her performance in the rest of the tournaments was outstanding. Ahead of the US Open, she had also won the Cincinnati and the Citi Opens. Thus, she headed into the US Open with great confidence and has now won that tournament as well
Coco Gauff becomes the 10th teenager to become the Women’s Singles Champion of the US Open
The US Open has had a couple of very young champions over the years. In fact, before Coco Gauff, nine other women had won the Women’s Singles Championship of the US Open. In 1979, at 16 years, 8 months, and 28 days old, Tracy Austin became the youngest US Open Women’s Champion ever. It is a major achievement for Coco to be even the 10th woman to enter this list of greats.
Besides that, Coco Gauff has also become the first ever American teenager to win a Women’s Singles Grand Slam in this century. Apart from her and Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf, Monica Sales, Martina Hingis, Serena Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Maria Sharapova, Bianca Andreescu and Emma Raducanu have also won the title as teenagers.
