Coco Gauff received a walkover from Naomi Osaka when they locked horns in the fourth round of the China Open on Tuesday (October 1) inside Diamond Court. Osaka had won the first set but after winning four games in the second set, she couldn’t continue anymore, and with a scoreline that read, 3-6, 6-4, Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals.
The four-time Grand Slam champion suffered from a lower back injury. When the match ended and both the players shook each other’s hand, Gauff lent a helping hand to Osaka as she carried the Japanese star’s bags off the court and fans praised Gauff for this gesture.
Before the clash with Osaka, Gauff knocked out Clara Bur and Katie Boulter in straight sets. Osaka, on the other hand, won her matches in straight sets except for her second-round clash with Yulia Putintseva. The China Open was the 26-year-old’s first tournament since her second-round exit at the US Open.
Coco Gauff reveals if she can beat a 16-year-old male football player
Coco Gauff responded to whether it’s reasonable to compare her to a 16-year-old male athlete. Before the China Open, Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz promoted the event and WTA shared a video of the same. One fan, however, wrote about a “guy” who feels Gauff is nowhere near as athletic as him. Gauff noticed the comment and responded that though she may not be a match for him due to biological differences, female athletes from different sports can defeat him.
Gauff will next face Yuliia Starodubtseva and the quarterfinal clash will be their first encounter on the WTA Tour. The winner of the match will face either Paula Badosa or Zhang Shuai.
