Coco Gauff is in Riyadh, aiming to defend her WTA Finals title. She will be up against compatriot Jessica Pegula in her first round robin match on November 2.

In her pre-tournament press conference, Gauff said she thinks the WTA being more open makes it more interesting than the ATP, pointing out how predictable the men’s tour has become since 2024, given that only Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are winning the majority of the tournaments.

It’s great to have four different Grand Slam champs this year. All the girls have had a competitive year across the board, and I think it makes the sport more exciting when there are multiple chances for something to happen. Although Carlos and Jannik are doing great, there’s talks of there needing to be a third person to make it more interesting. I think it’s better to have different champions to the same two.

This year on the women’s tour, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka dominated the most as she has played eight finals, winning four titles, including the US Open. Gauff has dealt with ups and downs this season because she made deep runs, reached four finals, and won two titles, but also suffered an early-round exit. World No.2 Iga Swiatek too struggled earlier this year, but as the season progressed, she regained her form and took home three titles, including Wimbledon.

The four Majors on the WTA Tour this year saw different champions. Madison Keys and Gauff claimed the Australian Open and the French Open, respectively, while Swiatek won Wimbledon and Sabalenka defended her US Open crown. But on the men’s tour, Alcaraz and Sinner have split the last eight titles between them.

Felix Auger-Aliassime on the difference between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz and the rest of the ATP Tour

Jannik Sinner is currently in Paris, bidding to win his first title in the last Masters 1000 of the season. He went past a struggling Alexander Zverev in the semifinals to schedule the final match against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Sinner holds a 2-2 head-to-head record against the Canadian ace. The two defeats that he registered were in the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open this year. While Sinner did not have to grind much in his semifinal match in Paris, Auger-Aliassime had to overcome Alexander Bublik, following which, he talked about the levels of the ATP players at the press conference.

I observe everything that happens, the players, everyone’s pace. But Alcaraz and Sinner are undoubtedly at a very high level. There are also players who have shown great consistency, like [Taylor] Fritz, for instance. They have shown a lot of consistency. I have a lot of work to do in that aspect, but for a few months now, I see that I am reaching the right level, that I am truly controlling my game.

If Sinner wins the Paris Masters, he will become the player with the most titles this season after Alcaraz on the men’s tour. The six-time Grand Slam champion clinched eight titles from 10 finals, including the French Open and the US Open, and right after his win at Flushing Meadows, he dethroned Sinner from the rankings table. Sinner will become the World No.1 on Monday if he beats Auger-Aliassime.

Alcaraz also played the Paris Masters, but his run surprisingly ended earlier than expected. Cameron Norrie knocked him out in the opening round. It was the second time the 22-year-old lost in the opening round of a tournament this year. After Paris, Sinner and Alcaraz will be in Turin for the ATP Finals, where the former will be bidding to defend his title.
