Deiveson Figueiredo came up trumps in his first ever title defense of his UFC Flyweight Championship. The Brazilian defeated American, Alex Perez in the very first round via. submission. (guillotine choke)The win marked Deiveson’s 20th win in his professional MMA career and his 9th win in the UFC. Alex came into the fight as a replacement for Cody Garbrandt, who was initially supposed to face the Brazilian; unfortunately, Cody suffered a torn bicep and was forced to pull out of the fight.

In the immediate aftermath of the fight, Brett Okamoto of ESPN tweeted that he had spoken to Cody Garbrandt and had learned that Cody was ready to take on Figueiredo next, adding that he would be ready by March.

Brett Okamoto tweeted, “Spoke briefly to Cody Garbrandt (@Cody_Nolove). “Alex Perez was just someone they gave Figueiredo to build up our fight more. I knock that guy (Figueiredo) out in the first or second round. I’ll be ready by March.”

Cody Garbrandt made his switch to the flyweight division from the bantamweight division, just this August. And, he is still yet to make his flyweight debut.
