Cody Rhodes made his return to SmackDown this week, where he was expected to address his upcoming tag team match with John Cena and Logan Paul at Money in the Bank. While Rhodes did reflect on his emotions after losing the Undisputed WWE Championship to Cena, The American Nightmare took things a step further by dropping a bombshell—revealing that The Rock had made him an offer to “sell his soul.”
Rhodes reflected on his year as the Undisputed WWE Champion, acknowledging the challenges he had faced. However, what stood out most to him was The Rock’s offer to become his champion. The American Nightmare admitted that no matter how many times he turns it down, the tempting proposal from The Final Boss still lingers—always waiting for him to say yes.
I thought about The Final Boss asking me for my soul and the entire world theorizing what he meant, the scary part was he was 100% serious and no matter how many times I say no, the offer still stands.

What stood out in this segment was the noticeable shift in The American Nightmare’s expression as he delivered that line. It hinted that The Great One may still be interested in pursuing Rhodes’ “soul” in the years to come. When paired with The Rock’s past comments about wanting to work with Rhodes in a heel role, Cody’s remark adds an intriguing layer to their dynamic.

Many fans anticipated The Prodigal Son would turn heel at this year’s Elimination Chamber, but WWE took a different route, assigning that role to John Cena instead. As of now, a heel turn for Cody Rhodes doesn’t appear to be in the cards. Reports suggest that WWE hasn’t seriously considered the idea yet, and any potential character shift remains a distant possibility.
Cody Rhodes sent a bold message to John Cena ahead of Money in the Bank
Cody Rhodes also delivered a powerful promo on SmackDown, making it clear that his next goal is to regain control and reclaim the Undisputed WWE Championship. However, he didn’t shy away from addressing his misstep at WrestleMania 41, acknowledging that a moment of subtle hesitation may have jeopardized not only his own future but that of WWE and the Undisputed Title itself.

The American Nightmare admitted that it was his own fault for going easy on The Cenation Leader. However, he made it clear that he will never make that mistake again. Rhodes vowed that at Money in the Bank, he’s coming to turn the tables on The Franchise Player—a step he sees as necessary before ultimately reclaiming the Undisputed WWE Championship.
He forced me to make a choice, and I hesitated. I don’t know if John Cena is going to ruin professional wrestling, but if he does, then I am partially to be blamed. But if you’re listening champ, I need you to know that I will NEVER hesitate with you again.

The 39-year-old assured the WWE Universe that he won’t allow John Cena to “ruin wrestling forever.” He boldly declared that sooner rather than later, he will dethrone The Cenation Leader to protect the future of the company. The Prodigal Son claimed that Money in the Bank will mark the beginning of the end for Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect as he prepares to wind down his legendary career in December.
John Cena called Cody Rhodes a wannabe
John Cena also appeared on this week’s SmackDown, arriving a bit later in the show to deliver his response to Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso. Main Event Jey made a strong entrance, but was soon interrupted by Cena, who came out with a fiery rebuttal. The 17-time World Champion didn’t hold back, making bold statements about both Rhodes and Uso, further intensifying the build toward Money in the Bank.

The Cenation Leader fired back by labeling both Uso and Rhodes as “wannabes” who are desperate to be like John Cena. He claimed that while The American Nightmare craves his fame, The Yeet Man is only after his money. Cena dismissed them as talentless performers who merely call themselves professional wrestlers, with nothing more than an ambition to imitate him.
I am upset too, it is professional wrestling’s biggest wannabes. You [Cody Rhodes] are nothing more than a John Cena wannabe. You [Jey Uso] are nothing more than a John Cena wannabe.

Moreover, The Franchise Player lavished praise on his Money in the Bank partner, Logan Paul. He called The Maverick a self-made man who deserves far more recognition than both Uso and Rhodes. Cena confidently declared that at Money in the Bank, their team will prove its dominance by putting an end to The Yeet Man and The Prodigal Son once and for all.
