The ending of WrestleMania XL is arguably the best night in professional wrestling history. However, there were a lot of speedbumps getting to that point. Apart from several injuries, there was a huge discourse about the main event of the show. Although fans expected Cody Rhodes to finally finish his story in the main event, The Rock‘s return to professional wrestling put some doubts in that plan.
Speaking on The Pivot Podcast, The American Nightmare opened up about his thought process while the main event of WrestleMania XL was under contention. Rhodes said that where he butted heads with The Final Boss was the idea that one could simply come back in the middle of a storyline and take WrestleMania for yourself simply because you are The Rock.
Many people told Rhodes that The Brahma Bull could do whatever he wanted because of his stature. He even saw a wrestling podcast where the hosts claimed that the 39-year-old would be fine with stepping aside and finishing his story later in the year. He thought that this was insane. The last match of WrestleMania was the Super Bowl for them. It was the biggest money match for WWE.
The idea that somebody thought that I would just be cool with it is… They don't know me. That's nonsense. I've worked my whole life for this.Cody Rhodes on The Pivot
Therefore, if someone thought Rhodes would be cool with something like this, they clearly did not know him. Even The People’s Champion should have known that he would not be cool with it. He revealed that the two eventually did come to an understanding. This led to arguably the greatest main event in the history of WrestleMania.
Cody Rhodes showers massive praise on The Rock, calling him a professional wrestler at heart
On the same podcast, Cody Rhodes said that he was not a fan of the 52-year-old anymore. Admittedly, he grew up a huge fan of his. He even had a lot of respect for the former WWE Champion, maybe more than anyone else in any locker room. When they first made eye contact, the former AEW EVP got an instant understanding of who he was.
The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment was not a movie star. He was not a potential presidential nominee. He was not a businessman with all these partnerships. His eyes said that he was a professional wrestler who understood the nature of the business. He knew how to play with the emotions of the audience and get them to come back to attend shows. This garnered a lot of respect for him in the mind of the WWE Undisputed Champion.
Despite this, their ideological differences regarding WrestleMania XL may have caused tensions between the two. Alternatively, this could simply be a ruse by Rhodes to hype up his inevitable match against The Final Boss.
