In Short
  • Colin Cowherd argues that LeBron James' eight years with the Lakers are Hall of Fame worthy.
  • He highlights the Lakers' poor performance before James' arrival and his significant impact on the team's success.
  • Cowherd and his colleague believe the Lakers have failed to adequately support LeBron during his tenure.

Now, headlines surrounding LeBron James have shifted to where questions are being raised about whether he would want to return to the Los Angeles Lakers.

He agreed with the franchise’s decision to pivot towards building their roster to complement Luka Doncic. The Slovenian is 14 years younger, which makes him the obvious candidate to become their franchise cornerstone.

However, Governor Jeanie Buss‘ apparent distaste for James’ attitude has prompted questions about whether the top brass wants him around.

She tried to dismiss the narrative, but it was clear that somewhere she loathed the fact that the King proclaimed himself to be the savior of her organization. That, though, and all the narratives of the Lakers’ apparent dissent towards James irked Colin Cowherd.

Tom Haberstroh… wrote an article yesterday saying that, ‘LeBron James, just in his Lakers’ career, is a Hall of Famer.’ It’s very much like Tom Brady in his career.

Colin Cowherd said on The Herd

The longtime journalist believes that LeBron James’ eight years with the Lakers are akin to what Tom Brady had in the last few years of his time in the NFL. If the latter’s career can be considered Hall of Fame-esque, then so is the four-time champion’s.

Those numbers and accolades alone make it ‘Hall of Fame’ worthy. Therefore, any conversation surrounding his importance to the organization should start with what he has achieved individually, before even getting to what he has done for the Lakers.

After talking about the individual accomplishments, Colin Cowherd then moved on to how LeBron James transformed the Los Angeles Lakers.

Do you remember how bad they were pre-LeBron?… They had the worst record in the league for 5 years… Worse than the Bulls! Worse than the Wizards!… He has overcome poor owners, a tiny staff, four coaches in eight years… LeBron gets there, eight years, six playoffs.

Colin Cowherd said

The 62-year-old pointed out that overcoming such challenges and turning a team into a winner is extremely difficult to do in professional sports.

A lot of things have to happen for a team to be moderately successful. For the Akron native to come in and instantly make them perennial postseason contenders is enough for the Lakers to know how valuable LeBron James is to them.

Cowherd ended up comparing the four-time league MVP to Hollywood icon Jack Nicholson. Just like how the latter has delivered classics throughout his career as an actor, so has James in the 23 years he has been in the league. Therefore, the Lakers should do whatever they can to keep him.

Colin Cowherd’s colleague believes Lakers ‘failed’ LeBron James

After Colin Cowherd made his point, he invited his colleague, Jason Timpf, to give his opinion on whether the Lakers have ‘failed’ LeBron James.

The truth of the matter is, when LeBron has been in a Lakers jersey, he has covered for and carried that team through management errors. Since LeBron joined the Lakers, when he’s been on the floor, they are outscoring teams by 1225 points. When he’s off, they are getting outscored by 664 points… Mind you, they had Anthony Davis and Luka the entire time.

Jason Timpf said

He added that the franchise had quite a lot of chances to build a team that the league’s all-time scoring leader could lead to another championship or two.

Instead, they did not do a good job, and now they are trying to pivot towards Luka Doncic at the expense of the man who returned the franchise to relevance.
