It wasn’t too long ago when a quarterback-tight end duo ruled the NFL winning six Super Bowl trophies and dominating for two whole decades. Turns out, in just a couple of years post their departure, the NFL has found another legendary duo in the making– Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. So believes the prominent sports analyst Colin Cowherd.
Ever since the Kansas City Chiefs became one of the only two teams to win two back-to-back Super Bowls, they are viewed as the future dynasty just like the New England Patriots. Given, the first team in the history of the NFL to win two consecutive Super Bowls was the Patriots.
During the recent episode of “The Herd” podcast, host Cowherd made a fascinating comparison between the Mahomes-Kelce duo to the legendary Tom Brady–Rob Gronkowski duo. He also discussed how the dynasties of the Chiefs and Patriots in the last two decades.
Travis Kelce signed a new deal– a two-year deal with Kansas City. He is creative and he is in sync with [Patrick] Mahomes. They are the No. 1 tight end-quarterback duo in playoff history, in fact, No. 1 duo I think in playoff history. He’s just one of those guys when he gets to the playoffs and he gets to really situational football and it’s third and seven, it just feels like Mahomes and Kelce are [Tom] Brady and [Rob] Gronkowski.Colin Cowherd said
The sports analyst highlighted their chemistry is hard to explain but one of them always knows where the other one at.
Tom Brady-Patrick Mahomes parallel in the NFL
This isn’t the first time when sports radio host Cowherd has drawn parallels between the legendary players of the Patriots to the star players of the Chiefs. Last year, he compared Mahomes with the NFL legend Brady, when the Chiefs were struggling with their receivers.
He argued that Mahomes’ situation in the 2023 season was quite similar to the time when Brady also lacked a good receiver. Cowherd highlighted both Brady and Mahomes had to rely upon their tight ends for offensive success.
The Chiefs’ star quarterback is often compared to the winningest quarterback of the NFL and is promptly known as the latter’s successor in the league. Mahomes has already won three Super Bowl rings and by the time he retires, he is likely to compete with Brady’s record of seven rings.
