Colin Cowherd Labels Super Bowl-Winning Jalen Hurts as Tier-2 Quarterback: “Some QBs in This League Are Taylor Swift”

Jalen Hurts might have won the Super Bowl but in Colin Cowherd's view, he wouldn't have pulled it off without the help of his superstar teammates.

Colin Cowherd and Cam Newton think alike (kind of). Both believe Jalen Hurts is just below the true elites in the NFL quarterback pyramid.

Hurts won the Super Bowl by giving an MVP-caliber performance, but it’s not enough for Newton and Cowherd to count the 27-year-old among the top four or five quarterbacks in the league.

In the recent episode of FS1’s The Herd, host Colin Cowherd argued that Hurts is the anti-Taylor Swift.

Some quarterbacks in this league are Taylor Swift; they’re leading the entire tour. Most quarterbacks in this league are the Spice Girls; they’re part of an ensemble. Jalen is part of an ensemble.

Now, Swift fans shouldn’t view this negatively. Cowherd is not implying that Hurts has a bone to pick with the pop star. It’s actually the opposite.

What the veteran tried to infer is that, unlike Swift, Hurts isn’t capable of carrying a show/team all by himself. He won the Super Bowl because of the stars around him.

As Cam Newton previously said,

When you’re throwing to a guy like AJ Brown or DeVonta Smith, you have a tight end skill set, you have a dominant defense, and you have the best running back in the game. Download Madden and see how many stars are on the offensive side of Philly.

Even EA, the proprietors of Madden 26, graded Hurts 86 overall, which is far lower than his peers Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes. USA Today’s Geoffrey A. Knox found it insulting.

An 86 overall grade still seems insulting. So does tying him with Justin Herbert, and we’re going to need an explanation of the Eagles quarterback landing behind Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff.

Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel took the argument to another level. Daniel believes Hurts will not be the first name to pop up in an NFL owner’s mind when building a team. They would rather pick Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, or Lamar.

Jalen Hurts is on a mission to be the best football player

Hurts was written off after he lost the quarterback job to Tua Tagovailoa at Alabama. Fans quickly forgot that he went 26-2 in his first two seasons with the Tide, and he brought out the same efficiency after transferring to Oklahoma. He won 12 games for the Sooners before the campaign ended with a loss in the Peach Bowl.

The Eagles took a chance on Hurts. He struggled during the initial two years in Philly before posting a 14-win season and a Super Bowl appearance. The Eagles lost on that occasion, but it gave Hurts a chip on his shoulder.

Hurts’ performance earned him a five-year, $255 million ($180 million guaranteed) contract extension, which made him the highest-paid quarterback for a short time.

2023 began in the right fashion, but the Eagles lost their momentum near the end of the year. They lost 32-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wildcard round.

Hurts finally managed to cross the final hurdle in 2024. He posted 221 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception (129.32 QBR) to beat the Chiefs 40-22 in New Orleans.

This story of mine… It’s still just getting started. There are movie moments still to come… I’m on this mission: to be the best player, leader, and man that I can be. I know everything will unfold according to God’s timing. I am blessed to be where my feet are; my trust is in his hands.
