Jan-Lennard Struff vs Marco Cecchinato: Match Preview
Home-crowd favored Jan-Lennard Struff is suffering from lost form and has had a topsy-turvy 2020 season so far.
With a 13-11 win-loss record, his best finish was in the Cincinnati Masters – a quarterfinals loss to Novak Djokovic, the eventual winner. He also made the third rounds of the US Open and the Dubai Open. However, the world no. 32 has no titles to his name in his entire career – something that his opponent can boast about. He also participated in the Bett1Hulks Indoors tournament here last week, where he was shocked in the first round by fellow countryman Oscar Otte.
Marco Cecchinato had been in great form in 2018 and 2019, even reaching a career-best ranking of 16, but has dropped out of form since then. He has sprung up this season though, reaching the finals of the Sardinia Open where he lost to Serbia’s Laslo Đere. However, he prefers playing on the slower clay courts, and his form on the other surfaces simply can’t match his performances on clay.
Jan-Lennard Struff vs Marco Cecchinato: Head-to-Head
The head-to-head between the two players is balanced at 2-2 in all ATP events (including Challenger and Futures). Both their previous official matches took place in 2018. Their first was at the Hungarian Open in Budapest, where the slow clay courts gifted Cecchinato a three-sets victory. The second meeting, in Winston-Salem, was a lopsided one, with Struff taking home a straight-sets win.
They have played against each other twice in two Challenger and Futures events way back in 2012 and 2013, with each of them taking one win each there too.
Jan-Lennard Struff vs Marco Cecchinato: Match Prediction
The seventh seed, Jan-Lennard Struff possesses a great serve and powerful groundstrokes. However, his erratic gameplay may prove to be a bane against Cecchinato, a baseline player.
However, the home crowd coupled with the hard court surface, not to Cecchinato’s preference, will give Struff a slight edge to help him pull through.
Match Prediction: Jan-Lennard Struff to win in three sets against Marco Cecchinato.
