Seven times NASCAR Cup series champion Jimmie Johnson had a day to forget in his Circuits of the Americas debut. The Legacy MC co-owner failed to complete the first lap of the race after an incident on turn 19 took him out. The No:84 crew failed to fix the car before the time ran out under the damaged vehicle policy.

Johnson brought a minority share of Petty GMS Racing towards the end of 2022 and became co-owner of the Chevy team alongside fellow record Cup champion Richard Petty. The rebranded Legacy MC fielded the No:84 Chevy for JJ at COTA as they did in Daytona 500. The veteran has three more races, including the Chicago Street race scheduled this season with the No:84.

Johnson was joined by F1 world champions Jenson Button (P18) and Kimi Raikkonen (P29) in his COTA debut. He had the worst finish among the three. At the same time, talking to Fox after the DNF pointed out that he got caught up in a mess after starting at the back. Brad Keselowski’s No:6 RFK Ford collected him from the outside.

What a disappointing finish. Unfortunately, we got off to a slow start yesterday and qualified poorly. We all know what happens when you start in the back, and, unfortunately, we were caught up in that. Just a wild and crazy first lap that was taking place,” Jimmie Johnson said.

I thought I had the wreck missed, but I just saw a flash of red out of nowhere. I guess there was more going on the outside of the No. 6 car (Brad Keselowski) as it was spinning, and I saw him and just got collected,” Jimmie Johnson added.

In case you missed it: Who are the active Cup drivers with more NASCAR Cup Series appearances than A.J. Allmendinger?
