The UFC Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov secured his 29th win against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 and with this win; he hung up his gloves following the announcement of his retirement. However, ‘The Eagle’ hasn’t officially vacated his title but UFC is expected to book a title fight soon for the 155-pound division.
One of the major prospects for the title is the former two-division champion, Conor McGregor who will be making his comeback against Dustin Poirier in a match that is scheduled for January. Both Dana White and Conor agreed to this fight but it is yet to be made official yet.
The other guy that is in the title run is Tony Ferguson who was scheduled to face Khabib for the title unification match, but due to this COVID-19 Khabib couldn’t come for this fight. Justin Gaethje fought Tony and defeated him in the match, now Tony will be eying for the championship and he won’t let it go this time.
Chael Sonnen predicted the fighters for Title Match
Chael Sonnen appeared in Ariel Helwani’s talk show, Ariel and The Bad Guy. Talking to Helwani, Sonnen says “If I call it, it’ll be a long shot. It makes all sense in the world to just put the belt up there”. UFC doesn’t like keeping title vacant for a long time so a title match should be coming soon.
Helwani asked Sonnen who is going to be his top picks for the title. To which he answers, “That would be Conor McGregor and that would be Conor McGregor”. The next big lightweight event is scheduled in January between McGregor and Poirier. This fight will give a clear view that what is going to be the future of the lightweight division.
