Dagestan and Ireland went against each other as Usman Nurmagomedov defended his Bellator lightweight belt against Paul Hughes. It was a close fight in which the Team Khabib member edged out and won the fight via majority decision. However, according to many, including Conor McGregor, it was a clear robbery and Hughes should have declared the winner.
Conor McGregor, who has been indulged in this rivalry from day one, couldn’t keep his promise to appear on the octagon side. However, he made sure to use his social media to protest against the result as he thought Hughes dominated the Dagestani. As a response, Team Khabib’s manager Ali Abdelaziz took to X and mocked the ‘Notorious’ for drug abuse related problems.
This whole rivalry gained momentum due to the history between Ireland and Dagestan which started with McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov. Back then, the Irishman got dominated and Hughes had plans to take revenge. Many experts believe that the challenger did better than McGregor against a ‘Nurmagomedov’ as he was closer to the win.

After the fight, both teams showed mutual respect towards each other and shared some wholesome words of praise. However, it is safe to say that the bad blood between McGregor and Team Khabib is still palpable. This was a great opportunity for the Irish to take a lead in this rivalry but the reality was different.
Team Khabib’s Usman Nurmagomedov reflects on his performance against Paul Hughes
Going into the fight, Usman Nurmagomedov was extremely confident about his win as he didn’t credit Paul Hughes enough. However, inside the cage, the Irishman made sure to give Nurmagomedov the hardest 25 minutes of his professional career. The champion found early success with multiple takedowns, but was getting caught on the feet.
In the third round, due to eye pokes and low blows, Nurmagomedov got a point deduction but it didn’t affect his win. After five rounds, he was declared the winner but it was definitely controversial. In an interview after the fight, the champion shared his opinion and what mistakes he made.

Usman Nurmagomedov mentioned that in order to get a rematch, Hughes needs to gather two more wins against top candidates. The challenger, on the other hand, wants the rematch to take place in his hometown in Belfast, Ireland. The fight was a major success for PFL and it would be interesting to see how the promotion plans to capitalize on this rivalry.
