- Conor McGregor is targeting a return to the Octagon on July 11, 2026, during International Fight Week.
- His last fight was in 2021, and a planned matchup against Michael Chandler was canceled due to injury.
- MMA insider Ariel Helwani's reporting has added credibility to McGregor's potential comeback plans.
Conor McGregor’s return to the Octagon had increasingly turned into one of the sport’s least credible storylines, as repeated comeback teases failed to materialize. The Irishman’s frequent hints without follow-through had eroded confidence around any timeline tied to his name. However, recent reporting from MMA insider Ariel Helwani has pointed toward a potential return during International Fight Week.
McGregor last competed in the UFC in 2021, suffering a leg injury to Dustin Poirier in the opening round of their trilogy bout. The Irishman was later scheduled to return at UFC 303 in 2024 against Michael Chandler after the pair served as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 31. However, the matchup was ultimately canceled after McGregor sustained a significant toe injury close to fight night.
Helwani recently indicated that McGregor’s return was targeted for July 11, suggesting plans were firmly in place with little margin for disruption. He also referenced journalist Petesy Carroll as a supporting source, adding weight to the update. Shortly after, McGregor shared footage from the SBG gym in Ireland, appearing in high spirits in a customized Irish Adidas tracksuit while showcasing UFC murals.
We told you about the meeting two weeks ago. I told you it went well. Petesy told you it went well. At this point, I think it would be safe to say that it would be a disastrous situation, something disastrous would of had to have happened if he’s not fighting on July 11.

There had been significant speculation that the Irishman would return at the UFC White House event, as he was vocal about wanting a spot on that card. McGregor also hinted at committing to a six-month training camp specifically for the occasion. His longtime coach, John Kavanagh, further fueled the narrative by suggesting that McGregor was fully focused on making a comeback at the June 14 event.
However, the former two-division champion also revealed that the UFC had already offered him a fight, with the process now hinging on the contract being finalized. Among the names linked to a potential matchup was welterweight Carlos Prates, whose emergence made him a viable option. That possibility appears unlikely, though, as Prates is scheduled to face Jack Della Maddalena at UFC Perth in May 2026.
Helwani remains one of the most trusted voices in MMA, backed by years of experience covering the sport and consistently delivering verified information on major developments. His reporting has often aligned with official announcements, lending credibility to updates surrounding Conor McGregor’s timeline. While the proposed return date appears increasingly solid, the opponent and details are yet to be confirmed.
Former rival calls out Conor McGregor for a catchweight bout to avenge 2013 loss
Max Holloway first faced Conor McGregor in August 2013 at UFC Fight Night 26 in Boston, marking an early chapter in both fighters’ careers. McGregor secured a unanimous decision victory after controlling much of the bout despite suffering a knee injury mid-fight. The contest was largely dictated by the Irishman’s grappling and top control, limiting Holloway’s offense over three rounds.

Since that bout, McGregor became a two-division UFC champion but has also experienced a prolonged stretch of inactivity in recent years. In contrast, Holloway developed into a featherweight champion and later secured the BMF title while remaining active at the highest level. He is currently recovering from his UFC 326 BMF title loss against Charles Oliveira and has floated an option for Conor McGregor’s return.
Conor got one over me. He’s talking about coming back, I’m coming off a loss. If he doesn’t want to cut weight, then I don’t wanna cut weight. We can do it at any weight, it’s just about getting it back.

Conor McGregor was also critical of the UFC 326 bout, describing it as an underwhelming showing from both Holloway and Oliveira. He had previously questioned the fight not taking place at welterweight, where the BMF title was introduced. With both fighters now linked again, a rematch between ‘The Blessed Express’ vs ‘The Notorious’ remains a plausible option as return plans take shape.
