Brandon Aubrey saved the Dallas Cowboys from losing their second game in a row. He hit the 64-yard game-winning field goal in overtime to secure a nail-biting 40-37 victory against divisional rivals the New York Giants.

This wasn’t a fluke. As a matter of fact, it was the second time the 30-year-old kicker had scored from 60+ yards (65 yards in 2024) and trails former Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, who hit from 66 against the Detroit Lions in 2023. Yet, Aubrey’s best play in the fixture turned out to be a 46-yard score to send the tie into overtime.

Aubrey went 6-for-6 on field goal attempts and 6-for-6 on extra points in the first two games and is currently third in the leaderboard (24 points) for most points scored (behind the Colts’ Spencer Shrader and the Titans’ Joey Slye).

He currently trails the Steelers’ kicker, Chris Boswell, in most points scored (2024 and 2025 seasons). Boswell accounted for 177 total points in 19 games, while Aubrey amassed 174. Finding a specialist kicker is similar to striking gold in a river stream. The 49ers are a great example of it.

Aubrey has repeatedly proven that he’s one of the most important parts of the Cowboys roster. So, would it surprise anyone if he signs a big extension?

Aubrey’s contract is set to end at the end of this season. He will become a restricted free agent. One Cowboys fan theorized that owner Jerry Jones should tie the Notre Dame graduate for the long haul with a mind-boggling $100 million offer.

The Cowboys are notorious for announcing absurd contracts for their players. Quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are among the highest-paid in their respective positions.

Jones usually makes his players happy, but $100 million is a stretch for the Cowboys as well. At present, the highest-paid kicker in the league is the Kansas City Chiefs’ Harrison Butker, who signed a four-year $25 million deal in 2024.

  • 1. Harrison Butker (Chiefs) $6.4 million APY
  • 2. Jake Elliott (Eagles) $6 million APY
  • 3. Cameron Dicker (Chargers) $5.5 million APY
  • 4. Graham Gano (Giants) $5.5 million
  • 5. Evan McPherson (Bengals) $5.3 million

Brandon Aubrey receives a special honor from the NFL

The Cowboys went into the Giants game on the back of an opening-day defeat against the reigning world champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. Prescott played his first game since injuring his leg last year. He threw 21 completions for 188 yards and set up running back Javonte Williams for two scores on the ground.

Lamb, on the other hand, dropped 4 crucial catches, despite racking up 7 for 110 yards. Aubrey went 2 for 2, with his longest being a 53-yard field goal try.

Prescott nearly doubled his tally in week two, completing 38 passes for 361 yards, 2 scores, and one pick. Summer acquisition George Pickens opened his account in a Cowboys jersey, and Lamb secured back-to-back 100-yard outings.

The game required overtime to decide the outcome. Aubrey’s fourth successful field goal attempt improved the Cowboys’ record to 1-1 for the season. His performance caught the eye of the league, and they awarded the third-year kicker with the NFC special teams player of the week award.

Aubrey played soccer in college and went pro by joining the MLS. However, he quit soccer to pursue a career in engineering. His wife, Jenn, convinced him to try out as a kicker in football. In 2022, the former USFL side, the Birmingham Stallions, drafted Aubrey. He spent the next two years with the Stallions before terminating his contract in 2023 to sign for the Cowboys.
