Two-time Olympic wrestling medalist Sushil Kumar has highlighted that the COVID-19 vaccine is a must for players especially with the Tokyo Olympics drawing close. The now 37-year old wrestler is known for competing in the 66 kg division for India and for having won the 2010 world title and medals (a silver and a bronze) at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.

While speaking to ANI, he explained the difficulties in training and challenges faced by athletes in such difficult times. Sushil said, “We are preparing for the Olympics and I feel that vaccine for Covid-19 is necessary because we are very close to the Games. Many of my teammates are infected due to this virus and it is a really tough situation for players. When athletes start training, at times there is a chance of them getting infected so it is really important that vaccine should come.”

Sushil Kumar said that since athletes have got back to training and are now looking to get back to rhythm, contracting the dreaded virus at this stage would mean starting afresh.

I would like to request citizens and athletes that please do follow all the norms and take proper care of your health because you are preparing for the Olympics, not for any state championship,” he said. “Risk is there, everybody there is at risk. Wherever our camp is going on all precautions have been followed but that is also not working so you have to take care of yourself and wait for the vaccine,” he signed off.
