The unfortunate demise of former LSU Tigers and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns wideout, Kyren Lacy, has shaken the football world, sending ripples across the professional and collegiate spheres. Lacy, who was involved in a hit-and-run fatal crash, reportedly committed suicide and passed away yesterday in Houston, Texas.
Kyren Lacy, a kid from Louisiana, was promised to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft in Wisconsin. A momentary lapse in judgment in December, when the 24-year-old sped through the Louisiana 80 highway, resulted in the unfortunate death of a 78-year-old man. The football star didn’t even offer any first aid, nor called any authorities or emergency services.
He, subsequently, turned himself in January and was released on the same day with a six-figure bail. He was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run with death, and reckless operation of a vehicle. The accident had changed the youngster’s life completely, from a negative barrage from social media and even traditional forms of media. The same has aligned with his equally falling draft stock.
Lacy eventually decided to end his life amid the rising online hate and the pressures before the grand jury hearing on Monday. The football world has since awoken with messages of seeking help in such situations.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott uploaded an Instagram story with the words, “Please!! Ask 4 Help. It doesn’t have to end that way,” along with an image of him wearing a cast sharing the same message.

The recent incident is a sign that more awareness needs to be raised to prevent young people from choosing the easy way out. In 2023, 12.2% of U.S. adults aged 18 to 25 reported experiencing suicidal thoughts within the past year, marking the highest prevalence among all adult age groups.
In any case, calling or texting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988, or visiting 988lifeline.org can be used to chat with someone. In case of an emergency or life-threatening situation, immediate 911 is advised.
