Australian Open boss Craig Tiley wants to have a giant Novak Djokovic statue at Melbourne Park. The Serb had a forgetful campaign at the 2025 Australian Open, but not in terms of his performance.
At 37, he continued to play a high level of tennis and even outclassed Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. But several controversies involving him made headlines. Hecklers vexed him and got befitting replies from him. Then a broadcaster from Channel 9 tried to be funny by making controversial remarks about the former World No.1.
Because of this, Djokovic asked for apologies after refusing to give an on-court interview. And finally, a muscle tear on his left leg forced him to pull out of the semifinal match against World No.2 Alexander Zverev. After the conclusion of the season’s first Major which saw Jannik Sinner defend his title, Tiley called for a Djokovic statue.
Although Djokovic has often incurred the wrath of the crowd and was also deported from Australia in 2022 due to his unvaccinated status, he is the most successful man in Melbourne, winning 10 titles.
Djokovic, after his exit, hinted at retirement when he said he was uncertain about participating in next year’s Australian Open.
Jannik Sinner responds to Alexander Zverev’s Novak Djokovic comparison
After the disappointing defeat in the final to Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, in the press conference, praised the Italian’s style by comparing it with Novak Djokovic. Sinner has now responded to the German’s remarks.
The three-time Grand Slam champion beat Sascha in straight sets and became the first man since Djokovic to win three consecutive majors on hard-court Grand Slam events.
