One of the teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) who have had a rough couple of seasons, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have named their four retentions ahead of the forthcoming season with quite some surprises. Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh are set to once again play for the Kings in IPL 2022.
The Punjab kings sprung quite a few surprises letting go of their captain and top run-getter for the last two seasons KL Rahul and the extremely talented Ravi Bishnoi. As has been the case with PBKS for quite some time now, they have heavily banked on young guns, who are yet to prove their merit and their retention list speaks so.
Both Mayank and Arshdeep have quite some heavy lifting to do next season if they are to justify their retention. With a new core team, DC have quite some buying to do at the mega auction coming up with a 72 crores purse. From a new captain to an opener and the entire middle order, the Kings will have their hands full at the auction.
Let’s look at three players PBKS might target at the IPL 2022 mega auction:
Eoin Morgan
First and foremost, the Punjab Kings will be on the lookout for a leader and Eoin Morgan is one the best in the business. Let it be his stint in the IPL with KKR last season, where he turned the fortune of the franchise in the second leg, or with the English side, Morgan is a leader who brings out the best in his side.
While one might argue that his form with the bat has been poor, to say the least. But the experience he brings in is invaluable. Moreover, once the Englishman gets going, he is tough to get a hold of and his firepower is something PBKS missed in the last two seasons with Nicholas Pooran struggling.
Jofra Archer
PBKS have been very interested in express quick bowlers and who better than Jofra Archer. The budding pacer is the perfect weapon in the shortest format. Archer’s pace coupled with his accuracy and the ability to surprise the batsman is rare. The Englishman has the ability to bowl at any stage of the game and turn the tables at will.
Having retained Arshdeep Singh, Archer will be the best bowler to complement the Indian quick who has numerous variations up his sleeve. Moreover, Archer’s inclusion will solve Punjab’s death over woes, something that has led to the side losing games on numerous occasions.
Hardik Pandya
The PBKS lower order has been a complete mess over the last couple of seasons with finishers like Nicholas Pooran struggling. Hardik Pandya‘s inclusion will tick yet another box they have been struggling to check off late. While Pandya too has been struggling, the Baroda all-rounder doesn’t take long to get back in the groove once he gets some game time under his belt.
Apart from his prowess with the bat, Hardik can chip in with an over or two in case he doesn’t recover in time for the new season. Even though with just a couple of overs, Pandya will provide an extra option for the skipper, something Punjab haven’t had for a long time.
