‘He controlled the game’ – Aaron Finch names his Player of the Tournament as Australia lifts T20 World Cup

The Australian cricket team led by Aaron Finch have captured the only ICC trophy which was missing from their decorated trophy cabinet, T20 World Cup on Sunday. The Men in Yellow beat New Zealand in an all Trans-Tasman showdown in the final pf the 2021 T20 World Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Despite a slow start, the Kiwis put up a fighting total of 172 on the board as Kane Williamson‘s brilliant knock steered them. But the Aussies proved to be too good as they chased it down with seven balls to spare. Half-centuries from David Warner and Mitchell Marsh helped Australia to their maiden T20 World Cup.

David Warner was named the Player of the Tournament for his brilliant show with the bat. The southpaw amassed 289 runs in seven innings at an average of over 48. With Finch misfiring, Warner shouldered the entire responsibility atop the order as he finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament.

While many were shocked with the decision, Finch too had another name in his mind for the award. The Aussie skipper feels that leg spinner Adam Zampa deserved the honour. Zampa scalped 13 wickets as he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup 2021. The leggie single-handedly carried his team through the middle overs.

“He controlled the game, got big wickets, super player,” said Aaron Finch at the post-match presentation. “Mitch Marsh, what a way to start, put pressure on from the start. Matthew Wade came in under an injury cloud and got the job done. He came in in the semi-final alongside Marcus Stoinis and did the business.”

Barring Warner and Zampa, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood were two other big guns who had a breakout tournament as their side emerged victorious. The only ICC trophy that is missing from the Aussie’s cabinet is the World Test Championship mace and it is a different ball game altogether.
