During their opening match of the IPL 2022 season, the Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 4 wickets on Sunday, March 27, at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bowl first in the match. Mumbai Indians (MI) made some players debuts in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 with Basil Thampi, Murugan Ashwin, Tilak Verma, Tim David, Tymal Mills and Daniel Sams. On the other hand, Shardul Thakur, Khaleel Ahmed, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Tim Seifert, Rovman Powell and Kuldeep Yadav made their debut for Delhi Capitals in the 15th edition of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians had four overseas players in their playing XI: Kieron Pollard, Tim David, Daniel Sams, and Tymal Mills. Kolkata Knight Riders, however, only included two overseas players: Rovman Powell and Tim Seifert. Also, this was only the second occasion in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history when a team fielded only two overseas players in the final XI in IPL. The first time it happened was in 2011 when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had played Eoin Morgan and Jacques Kallis as their two overseas players in the match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Mumbai Indians (MI) started off their innings well as Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan both fired with the bat. The opening pair batted brilliantly and Mumbai Indians were 53/0 at the end of the powerplay. Kuldeep Yadav picked up the first wicket for his team by dismissing MI captain Rohit Sharma in the 9th over. Rohit Sharma scored 41 runs off 32 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes. Also, Kuldeep Yadav picked up his second wicket by dismissing Anmolpreet Singh for 8 in the 11th over.

Young Tilak Varma looked brilliant in his debut game and he scored 22 runs off 15 balls, including 3 fours before losing his wicket in the 15th over, which was bowled by Khaleel Ahmed. Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Kieron Pollard on the 5th ball of the 16th over and Pollard was able to contribute only 3 runs off 6 balls for Mumbai Indians. Ishan Kishan scored 81 runs from 48 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes, as Mumbai Indians scored 177 runs. Tim David also was out after striking one six, but opener Ishan Kishan was in superb form and helped the team score 177.

While chasing the target, Delhi Capitals openers Prithvi Shaw and Tim Seifert were off to a good start but Mumbai Indians leg-spinner Murugan Ashwin came to bowl the 4th over of the match and he bagged the wickets of Seifert and Mandeep Singh by giving away just one run in the over. Also, Tymal Mills dismissed Rishabh Pant on the first ball of the 5th over and at the end of the powerplay, Delhi Capitals were at 46/3. In the 10th over of the match, Basil Thampi cleaned up Prithvi Shaw and Rovman Powell. Thampi picked up his 3rd wicket by dismissing Shardul Thakur, who played an amazing 22-run cameo knock.

In the end, Lalit Yadav scored amazing 48 runs and Axar Patel smashed 38 runs to snatch the win away from the Rohit Sharma-led side.
