“Best Role Model” – Michael Vaughan lauds Joe Root for his contribution to England Cricket

Joe Root

Following England’s series loss to the West Indies, batsman Joe Root stepped down as captain of the Test team on Friday. Joe Root has defined stepping down as England’s Test captain as one of his most difficult decisions, but he admits it only recently dawned on him how much more of an impact the role had had on him.

Michael Vaughan tweeted that Joe Root sacrificed all for the Red Ball club while he was in charge.. then had to cope with the Covid era. Joe Root is and will continue to be the game’s best role model for several years. now enjoying becoming the senior player for several more seasons.

With a number of successful records, the 31-year-old resigns, but a disastrous year of red-ball cricket made his situation untenable.

Likewise, English all-rounder Ben Stokes shared a photo of himself with Root on Instagram, captioning, It’s been an amazing trip with you, my friend. It was an honour to have one of my best friends leading us onto the field. You have given your all for English cricket, and we all would like to express our gratitude for your efforts and dedication.

The ties in Antigua and Barbados showed promise, but England were crushed by 10 wickets in the last Test to lose 1-0 in Root’s 64th Test as captain, despite the absence of important combo James Anderson and Stuart Broad, who were inexplicably left at home. That number in itself is a milestone for the most matches as England captain, and his 27 wins put him in first place in terms of the overall wins, but the Test side has now undergone another leadership change.

As England’s men’s Test captain, Root set the record for most matches and victories. He has more victories than Michael Vaughan, Sir Alastair Cook, and Sir Andrew Strauss combined. After Cook’s resignation in 2017, Root was named captain. He coached the team to several notable series wins, including a 4-1 win over India at home in 2018 and a 3-1 win over South Africa on the road in 2020.
