Being the captain of Chennai Super Kings, Dhoni has lifted the IPL trophy four times, and has led CSK into being the second most successful franchise of the league. Chennai Super Kings has missed only one play off in all the seasons, that is how successful Chennai has been in the IPL under the leadership of MSD. Dhoni had led CSK since 2008 and it was only this year when he decided to relieve himself of captaincy duties.
Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen recalls what the Chennai Super Kings meant to Dhoni while they were both playing for the Rising Pune SuperGiants in 2018.
During the seasons of 2016 and 2017 Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings were prohibited from participating in the IPL due to corruption charges. The captain of the yellow team played for the Rising Pune SuperGiants in those two seasons. Dhoni was dropped from captaincy the next season, after captainaing the side in 2016.
What Kevin Pietersen said to Star Sports about Dhoni’s passion for CSK:
Before the start of the match between Punjab Kings and Chennai at the Wankhede Stadium, Pietersen revealed to Star Sports that, “ Dhoni gave us all for the Pune team in those two seasons but he was truly elated after learning that Chennai were back in the IPL 2018.
“That yellow outfit means so much to MS Dhoni. I remember playing with him in Pune SuperGiants for a couple of seasons and he was so happy to back to CSK when they came back into the competition. He was incredibly professional. He did the best job he could because that is the kind of guy he is. He always gives his 100 per cent. In Pune, he was incredible in what he tried to deliver. But if you look at his energy, the way he punches at the grille of the helmet and how much CSK means to MS Dhoni. Its a family to him. Ravi has spent a lot more time with him,” he said.
