While India put up an impressive batting performance, the video of a fan hogged the spotlight as Kanpur Test memes flooded Twitter. Winning the toss, the hosts are in a dominant position as they finished the day with 258 runs on the board.

With the pandemic subsiding, the crowd has been allowed for the New Zealand tour of India. With the fans back in attendance, the atmosphere was electric as India looked to exact revenge for the loss in the World Test Championship final. As the home fans enjoyed their team’s batting on day one, a fellow spectator caught their eye.

A man was caught on camera chewing ‘gutkha’ while talking on the phone in the stands during the series opener Kanpur Test between India and New Zealand. The city of Kanpur is infamous for its excessive use of tobacco or ‘gutkha’ and netizens were quick to pounce on the viral clip of the fan.

Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer, who has been in the news lately for his sarcastic tweets, was one of the first to post a meme over the fan’s viral video. The incident took place during play on Day 1 after 70 overs were completed. The spectator was talking on the phone while chewing gutkha when the camera panned onto him.

Following a great start by Shubman Gill, India looked solid as Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara steadied the ship following a rocky start. The duo put up a fifty run stand before Gill departed. Both Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane threw away the starts they got before debutant Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja put up a century stand to take India past 250.
