The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had recently announced the annual central contracts of women’s players for the 2021-22 season. The salary of players signed under the A category, which is the elite group, is just 50 lakh Rs. However, the pay of male cricketers contracted in the elite category is 7 crore Rs.
The notable difference in pay structure between male and female cricketers attracted the attention of fans, who began discussing the issue, arguing that both men and women should be paid equally.
However, women’s cricketer, Thirush Kamini opines a different view stating that fans shouldn’t compare the pay structure of men’s cricket and women’s cricket. Talking on the YouTube Channel of cricket.com, she believes that men’s cricket had adopted the contract system and long time back and it is understandable why they are paid more.
“I think it’s important that we don’t compare women’s cricket with men’s cricket because they have been in that structure for a really long time. It’s completely understandable that men cricketers are getting paid ₹7 crores and then a woman cricketer earns only ₹50 lakh,” said Thirush Kamini.
Thirush Kamini on the growth of women’s cricket
Kamini also added that women’s cricket has made significant strides in the past few years. The Indian women’s team ended as runner-ups in the 2017 ODI World Cup and the 2020 T20 World Cup which made them visible in the eyes of the fans. She also stated that it will grow and develop more in the future and we should appreciate that the BCCI for including a contract system in women’s cricket.
“But you have to understand the kind of growth that women’s cricket has had over the years because, until a few years back, women’s cricketers didn’t have a contract system. Now I think we should appreciate the fact that we are having a contract system and players who are doing well are also part of the contract system,” added Thirush Kamini.
Thirush Kamini has represented India in 44 international matches and has scored 1129 runs. She last featured for India against South Africa in an ODI in 2017.
