IPL 2022: Mega auction stopped as auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapses

Tata IPL 2022 auctioneer Hugh Edmeades

The mega auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 is currently underway at the Hotel ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru. The event was taking place smoothly on Saturday before the auctioneer Hugh Edmeades had collapsed due to which the event has been halted as early lunch has been taken.

The incident took place when the Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was going under the hammer in the bidding war. Following this, Edmeadas had to go through some medical tests which revealed that it was a physical fall and no internal issues with him. This resulted in an early lunch and the proceedings will commence again shortly.

“A franchise representative informs that the auctioneer is fine. Should resume in a while. That’s a relief,” Sportstar reported.

Who is Hugh Edmeadas?

Hugh Edmeades was associated with the iconic Christie’s for 38 years before he started working as an independent fine art, classic car and charity auctioneer in 2016. The celebrated auctioneer has completed deals in excess of a whopping 2.7 billion pounds. In a glittering career, he had conducted more than 2,500 auctions across the globe before travelling to Jaipur for the IPL auction a few years ago.

“During my 38 years as an auctioneer, I have taken plenty of two-day auctions, but admittedly, none lasting a potential 12+ hours. However, I am not at all fazed by the prospect of being on my feet for up to six hours each day. Mentally and physically, I will be splitting the sessions into “bite-size pieces” and taking the opportunities to regroup during the breaks in the auction,” Edmeades was quoted as saying by InsideSport.
