James Pattinson aims a deadly throw at Daniel Hughes

Former Australian quick James Pattinson is renowned for his passion on the field and fairly aggressive attitude. It is this attitude that made him a fearsome bowler with the red cherry in his hand. But sometimes, players do lose cool, especially in the longer formats which tests not only one’s skill but perseverance.

For passionate cricketers such as the likes of Pattinson, it often comes like a burst of frustration on the field. A moment where they want to let it all get out but they do to the dismay of others. The Aussie quick was caught in such a moment and ended up almost injuring the batsman in the process.

The second Sheffield Shield between New South Wales and Victoria saw the former get outplayed yet again. While NSW was headed towards a certain defeat, Daniel Hughes stood between Victoria and a win. Hughes played a defiant knock of 89 off 319 balls in the second innings to delay their loss.

This gutsy knock didn’t go down well with Victoria bowlers, especially James Pattinson. In the 87th over of the innings, Pattinson hurled back a needless throw hitting Hughes on the knee. The batter could be seen agitated with the throw as they flung his helmet away in pain.

Former Test leg-spinner Kerry O’Keeffe was not at all impressed by Pattinson’s actions as he slammed him for his “unsavoury” behaviour. “The two most unsavoury aspects are, A) the send-off when you’ve got somebody out and, B) the chuck at the stumps by a bowler,” O’Keeffe told Fox Cricket.

Are we the only country that does it? Like, Mitch Starc does it for fun in England and he gets booed. Is it the way we play our cricket? You hit it back to the bowler, he picks it up and wants to peg you – I mean, what is going on there? The ball is dead once it’s in his hands. Walk back to the mark and bowl it again.
