‘A true association must deeply care about its players’ – Lisa Sthalekar slams BCCI’s apathy towards Veda Krishnamurthy

The second wave of COVID-19 has hit India hard and cases are multiplying by the day. More than 4 lakh cases per day have become normalcy and the number of fatalities is increasing as well. The pandemic has hit everyone, the rich and poor, alike. Many sportspersons around the globe have been affected by it and Indian women’s cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy is one of those who have been terribly affected.
Veda lost both her mother and sister to the virus in a span of weeks. The cricket fraternity came together to stand with Veda in such a trying time. Fans and cricketers have poured out their support on social media for the bereaved cricketer and are continuing to do so. Meanwhile, she has tested negative for the virus.
Lisa Sthalekar ‘disappointed‘ BCCI‘s treatment of Veda Krishnamurthy
Former Australia international Lisa Sthalekar slammed the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) for their indifference towards Veda’s plight. While Sthalekar calls for a player association in India, she asserts that a true governing body must care for its players instead of just focusing on the game. The Aussie adds how the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) treated its players

“Whilst not selecting Veda for the upcoming series may be justified from their point of view, what angers me the most is that as a contracted player she has not received a communication from the BCCI, just to even check how she is coping. A true association must deeply care about its players and not focus solely on just the game at any cost.“
“So disappointed. As a past player, the ACA has reached out daily to see how we are and provided all kinds of service. If there was a need for player association in India it is surely now. The stress, anxiety, fear, and grief that many players have experienced through this pandemic will take its toll on them as individuals and inadvertently affect the game,” she wrote on Twitter.
Krishnamurthy has played 48 ODIs and 76 T20Is for India. Her most recent appearance in competitive cricket came during the inter-state Women’s Senior One Day Trophy quarter-finals in March, where she represented Karnataka. She was dropped from the India Women squads for the one-off Test match, ODI and T20I series against England, which was named on Friday.
