Two Sri Lankan cricketers, Avishka Fernando and Kusal Perera, were tested positive for COVID-19 just days before the Asia Cup 2023. This is a serious issue of concern. This has raised a doubt on the participation of these two players  in the event, which is set to begin on August 30 and is jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Reports claimed that it was  during the ending of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), which concluded on 20th August, Fernando and Perera both exhibited the symptoms of COVID. Now, their participation in the Asia Cup will solely depend on their recovery, unless the test reports state negative. Both of these were the key players which could lead Sri Lanka to victory in the Asia Cup.

Despite not participating in ODIs since earlier this year, Avishka Fernando has displayed remarkable form in the recent Lanka Premier League by scoring 244 runs in 10 games. On the other hand, Kusal Perera, who had been inactive since January 2021 due to injuries, also made a strong recovery in the LPL 2023 and scored 210 runs in eight matches.

The problems continue with the Sri Lankan Cricket team, as their pacer Dushamantha Chameera and leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga have become uncertain for the approaching Asia Cup due to injuries.

According to the reports from ESPNCricinfo, Chameera could also be ruled out of the Asia Cup due to a shoulder injury he incurred during the recent Lanka Premier League. Hasaranga, who sustained a quadriceps injury prior to the LPL final, will miss at least the first couple of matches of the Asia Cup.

Sri Lanka is having their first match in the Asia Cup on 31st August against Bangladesh.
