An Indian cricket prodigy to say the least, Yashasvi Jaiswal, the lion-hearted left-handed opener from Bhandoni is becoming a top favorite for the Indian Test team. The 21-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener recently took the world by storm with his 13-ball fifty in IPL 2023. He was also added to the Indian squad for the WTC final.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, like his name, has been successful in earning numerous records to his name since 2015. He was added to the Limca Book of Records at the mere age of fourteen after he scored a triple century and picked up a ten-plus-wicket-haul in the Giles Shield Cricket Tournament in Mumbai.

Jaiswal was also the top run-scorer and player of the tournament for India in the Under-19 Asia Cup in 2018. He also became the youngest cricketer in the world to register a double-hundred in List-A cricket. His most recent record was his squash-buckling 13-ball fifty against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2023, registering the fastest-ever fifty in the IPL.

Jaiswal scored 315 runs at an average of 45 in five matches in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, including one century and a fifty. He smashed 213 runs in his Irani Cup debut for the Rest Of India against Madhya Pradesh. With an aggregate of 357 runs in that match, he became the top scorer of a match in Irani Trophy history.

IPL performances

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s IPL journey began when he was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 2.4 crores in the 2020 IPL auction. He went on to make his IPL debut in the same year for RR but played only three matches and scored just 40 runs. Regardless, Jaiswal being one of the only three players retained by the team for 2021 was a clear indication of his talent and the team’s belief in him.

He played 10 matches in 2021 and 2022, managing to score 249 runs and 258 runs in the two editions respectively.

He was put to the ultimate test in 2023 where he played all 14 matches in the usual home and away conditions. He went on to score a massive 625 runs at an average of just under fifty and a strike rate of 163.61. He also scored his maiden century in the IPL against the Mumbai Indians. His partnership with Jos Buttler at the top of the order has become a lethal one for the opponents.

Youngblood with a promising future

Ever since he arrived in the world of cricket, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been bashing records and scoring runs for fun. He had to struggle immensely in his initial days but it all seems to be paying off. With constant praise from various former cricketers and selectors, Jaiswal’s name is on everyone’s lips. He has had a terrific IPL 2023 season and he was also added to India’s squad as a stand-by player in the 2023 WTC Final.

“He has scored a 200 in the Vijay Hazare trophy. What he has done in IPL is just icing on the cake. that’s why, Yashasvi should be there in all three formats.” – Gautam Gambhir

With the test series against the Windies kicking off in July, while nothing is official yet, Jaiswal is expected to make his test debut for India, replacing Cheteshwar Pujara in the squad. It will be interesting to see if he gets a go in the series across formats as well.
