5 times when MS Dhoni showed nothing is greater than country for him
MS Dhoni
In this special day of 75th Independence Day, we’ll take you to several times, former India captain MS Dhoni displayed that nothing is greater for him than his country. He didn’t attend the birth of his daughter Ziva while leading the national team in 2015. He once said in one of his interview that country comes first, then his parents and then his wife. His pride and patriotism is deep ingested in his heart and he never shy away from displaying it. Let’s look at five moments where Dhoni showed how he is devoted to serve his country.
- Picked up the Indian flag when a fan dropped it
MS Dhoni as a person is quite phenomenal and that’s why the cricket fraternity respects him. One of his million fans was able to rush past the security onto the field to fall on his idol’s feet. The fan was carrying the Indian flag with him, which happened to have touched the ground while the fan was on the ground and Dhoni instantly picked it up.
2. Retired on 15th August
On this day, in 2020, India’s most successful captain big goodbye to the sport after a 15-year top career, leaving fans quite sad with the decision.
The announcement came from Dhoni’s Instagram account, when he posted video, montage of his top knocks to the tune of a classic Hindi track, Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon, with the caption: “Thanks a lot for your love and support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired.”
His decision came one year after a heart-breaking 18-run loss to New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2019 ODI World Cup in Manchester, England. Minutes later Suresh Raina announced his retirement from the sport too.
3. No India flag on helmet
Many times we’ve seen Dhoni respecting the Indian flag and his not putting it on his helmet is one of them. Sachin Tendulkar had started the trend of putting the Indian flag on top of the helmet back in 2000s and many Indian cricketers still follow it.
But Dhoni doesn’t do this as putting the flag on helmet would also mean putting the flag on the ground. Several times, wicket-keeper put their helmet on the ground while keeping to fast-bowlers. This clearly shows how much the Indian flag means to him that he do not even keeps it on the grass.
4. Logged in after 2 years & changed his Instagram DP
After his retirement from cricket in 2020, he hasn’t posted anything on Instagram. He kept off social media for two years but to celebrate the auspicious day of 75th Independence Day, he logged it and changed his dp to tricolour with the quote “I am blessed to be a Bhartiya”. Notably, Indian PM Narendra Modi has urged everyone to keep the Indian flag as the dp on their social media profile to celebrate the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
5.Love for wearing army dresses & balidan on gloves
Dhoni loves wearing Indian army dresses and balidan on gloves. Indian Premeir League team, Chennai Super Kings had an Indian army part in their jersey. He has often spoken publicly of his love for the Indian army.
After the 2011 World Cup win, he was conferred the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel by the Indian Territorial Army. And in 2018, he marched proudly up the then President Ram Nath Kovind in his army uniform to collect India’s third highest civillian award, the Padma Bhushan.
Also, he served in the Kashmir as part of Victor Force by taking the duties of patrolling, guard & post duty while staying with the troops for two weeks.
