Afghanistan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz who played a match-winning knock against England at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, faced the wrath of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the match. He missed his century by 20 runs and out of frustration, he slammed his bat on the boundary rope and a chair.
This happened during the 19th over when Adil Rashid delivered to Hashmatullah Shahidi. Shahidi and Gurbaz wanted to steal a run but the substitute fielder at the short mid-wicket, David Willey, picked it up and quickly threw it toward keeper Jos Buttler, who wasted no time in removing the bails.
Gurbaz made the dive but in vain. While returning to the pavilion after missing his century, he got angry and hence the action. He breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which is about “abuse of cricket equipment for clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”
He scored 80 runs from 57 balls with eight fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 140.35. Along with Gurbaz, Ikram Alikhil also scored his fifty (58 off 66), helping the team post 284. Later, the bowlers bundled out Jos Buttler’s men for 215 runs to win the match by 69 runs.
Afghanistan skipper Harshmatullah Shahidi hails Rahmanullah Gurbaz
Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored for Afghanistan and an entire team effort ensured the team’s thumping 69-run win over England. After the match, Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, at the press conference, hailed Gurbaz, calling him a match-winner for his side.
Shahidi said Gurbaz has the ability to turn the table and win the game for them. The skipper expects more match-winning knocks from the opener.
Gurbaz scored 47 and 21 in the first two matches Afghanistan played in the marquee event. They will next play New Zealand on October 18 in Bengaluru.
