Hardik Pandya, who led Team India in the second and third ODI against West Indies, played a captain’s knock in the third and decider match on Tuesday (August 1) at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. After the match, he revealed how his chat with former India captain Virat Kohli helped him get used to the fifty-over format.

Pandya slammed an unbeaten 70 runs from 52 balls with four boundaries and five sixes at a strike rate of 134.62. His fifty, along with half-centuries from Ishan Kishan (77 off 64), Shubman Gill (85 off 92), and Sanju Samson (51 off 41) helped India put on a big total of 351/5 in their allotted 50 overs.

After the match, Pandya recalled how Kohli has seen him play for India from his debut match and gave him some pointers which helped him score runs and get used to ODI cricket. He said how he wanted to execute that advice when the opportunity arises.

He just wanted me to spend some time on the crease and get used to the 50-over game as well because we have played so many T20 formats, and yeah, that kind of stayed in my mind and I was just waiting for the opportunity,” Pandya said after the match.

After struggling with injuries for a while, Hardik Pandya made a comeback to competitive cricket last year. But there are still doubts about whether he can bowl more overs, keeping in mind, the forthcoming ODI World Cup.

Though Pandya did not bowl much throughout the West Indies series, as per the ICC, he reassured that his body is fine and is ready to get more workload for the World Cup, starting in October in India. Pandya referred to the turtle and rabbit story, saying his process to fix everything has been slow but he is hoping to make everything work before the World Cup.
