Ajinkya Rahane was India’s vice-captain from 2014 till 2021. In the past few years, Rahane’s form had a massive dip, with his inconsistency being a major worry for everyone. Despite that, he was retained as vice-captain until he was dropped from the team after India’s tour of South Africa in 2022

Since then, the only red-ball cricket he played was for Mumbai, where he was the captain. Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer were tried in his place, but he ultimately returned to the Test team in the 2023 WTC final. He was dropped yet again after poor performances in India’s tour of West Indies.

He is preparing for the upcoming 2024 Ranji Trophy season, where he captains the side. They will play their first match on 5th January, where they travel to Patna to play Bihar.

Rahane started off his Test career with a bang. In his first 29 Tests, he amassed 2209 runs with an average of 51.37. That was in 2016. After that he had a huge drop in form, with him scoring 2868 runs in 56 Tests with an average of 32.22. As of now, the Indian Test team is trying to move on from Rahane and Cheteswar Pujara, the two pillars of the Indian Test team. For the foreseeable future, the 35-year-old will no longer be in contention for the Test team.
