Ambati Rayudu bid adieu to all forms of cricket after the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Throughout his cricketing career, he has seen a great deal of ups and down and he often blamed it on the politics going on amongst the selectors at the national as well as at the domestic levels.
He recently opened up about how he faced troubles when he started playing cricket back in 2003-04. Despite being touted as a brilliant middle-order batsman, Rayudu earned his call to don the Indian jersey in 2013. But his journey wasn’t smooth as he dealt with a lack of form and was sidelined from the squad.
In the interview, the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batsman revealed he had nothing to do with Vijay Shankar when he posted the tweet about “3d” glasses. But he did have problems with one “Hyderabadi person” in the team management.
Rayudu faced troubles in domestic cricket when he played for Hyderabad and accused former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) supremo Shivlal Yadav of ruining his career as he wanted his son Arjun Yadav to make his debut for India. Soon Rayudu left Hyderabad and represented Andhra but there also he faced issues as he did not like the then captain MSK Prasad’s methods which is why he returned to Hyderabad.
Ambati Rayudu said only MSK Prasad can answer why Vijay Shankar was selected in the squad
After debuting for India in 2013, he dealt with inconsistencies but his IPL season in 2018 earned him plaudits and soon he was considered a perfect batter to fill the No.4 spot. However, the chief selector MSK Prasad hailed Vijay Shankar as a three-dimensional player and played him in the 2019 World Cup, leaving Rayudu in a state of perplexity. He took a jibe at the selectors by taking to Twitter and writing: “Just ordered a new set of 3D glasses to watch the world cup.”
Rayudu clarified himself saying he had nothing to do with Shankar as the latter was just playing his game. But he questioned why the selectors chose Shankar instead of an experienced player in the squad. He said only MSK Prasad can answer why such things happened.
“It was not about Vijay Shankar. What could have he done? He was playing cricket. Whatever the thinking behind I could not understand. I would not understand if they were playing a World Cup or a normal league match,” he told in an interview with TV9 Telugu.
“Everyone went after Vijay Shankar. I did not have that intention. I could not understand their thinking and logic. If you have decided to replace me, you could have picked a similar player,” Rayudu added and said how can selectors pick a player who plays at No. 6 and 7 but push him to bat at No.4.
