On 6th September, Cricket Australia announced the Australian squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. The team was coached by Andrew McDonald and was picked by Chief Selector, George Bailey, former cricketer Tony Dodemaide and Head Coach, McDonald.
The team is captained by Pat Cummins, who will be a captain for the first time in an ICC ODI tournament. He had recently won the ICC World Test Championship in June 2023. The team has regulars like Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, David Warner and Josh Hazlewood. Marnus Labuschange and Nathan Ellis miss out, while Cameron Green, Sean Abbott and Josh Inglis will be travelling to India to play in their first ODI World Cup.
Australia are currently playing a 5 match ODI series in South Africa without important players like Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell. All will be available for the 3 match series in India before the 2023 ODI World Cup begins. Pat Cummins is in South Africa with the team, but isn’t playing as he is recovering from a fractured wrist.

Australia’s history in the ODI World Cup

Australia have always gone into each ODI World Cup as favourites to win the competition. In the world of Cricket, Australia has a rich history filled with great players since they started playing the sport.
Since the first World Cup in 1975. They won their first World Cup in 1987, which was held in India. After that they won the World Cup three times consecutively in 1999, 2003 and 2007. In the 2011 edition, they were knocked out of the quarter finals against eventual winners, India.
They again won the World Cup in 2015, beating New Zealand in the finals. In 2019, they were knocked out of the semi finals by England. In 2023, they are one of the favourites once again, with the team targeting their 6th World Cup title.
