Mumbai Indians on Wednesday (March 1) announced that their captain for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League will be Harmanpreet Kaur. That she will lead the Mumbai team was already known because needless to say, she is also India Women’s captain.

“We are thrilled to have Harmanpreet as the captain of Mumbai Indians’ first-ever women’s cricket team,” said Mumbai Indians owner Neeta Ambani in a statement released by the Mumbai Indians. “As the national captain, she has led the Indian Women’s team to some of their most exciting wins. And I am sure that with Charlotte (Edwards) and Jhulan’s (Goswami) support, she will inspire our MI women’s team to play their best cricket, display a sense of pride, and bring even more glory to women in sports.”

Harmanpreet recently became the first-ever player (men or women) to play a record 150 T20Is and has been one of the pillars of the Blue Jerseys for over a decade. The Arjuna Awardee made her debut at the age of 20 against Pakistan in an ODI match in 2009 and also scripted the record of the highest-ever score (170*) in a knockout game in a Women’s World Cup match.

In 151 T20I matches, she has amassed 3058 runs, with the highest being a 103-run knock. She has slammed a century and 10 half-centuries in the shortest format.

BCCI releases rousing WPL anthem

Meanwhile, five teams are set to clash against each other in the inaugural tournament over a period of three weeks. Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians will start their campaign against Gujarat Giants in the curtain opener on March 4 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.

Prior to the highly-anticipated league, the official Twitter handle of WPL released the WPL anthem “Ye toh bas shuruat hain. (This is just the start)” to pay tribute to the women players’ grit and determination who have reached heights despite many obstacles.

As per reports, Bollywood actresses Kirti Sanon and Kiara Advani will perform at the opening ceremony, while singer AP Dhillon will sing the WPL anthem at the DY Patil Stadium. Reports also claimed that the legendary singer Shankar Mahadevan will also sing the anthem in the stadium. The opening ceremony will last for about 30-45 minutes.
